Falkland Islands to hold referendum on sovereignty
The Falkland Islands will hold a referendum on its "political status" in a bid to end the dispute with Argentina over the archipelago's sovereignty.
The islands' government made the announcement ahead of the anniversary marking 30 years since the end of Argentina's 74-day occupation in 1982.
It said it wanted to send a firm message to Argentina that islanders want to remain British.
The UK prime minister said Britain would support the result of the vote.
The referendum will be organised by the Falkland Islands government and will take place in the first half of next year.
'Economic blockade'
The announcement comes amid growing tensions between the UK and Argentina surrounding the anniversary commemorations marking the islands' liberation by British forces on 14 June, 1982.
Foreign Office Minister Jeremy Browne is currently there on an official trip.
Argentina claims sovereignty over the islands it calls the Malvinas, and wants the UK to negotiate over their rule.
Recently, UK ministers have accused Argentina of trying to impose an "economic blockade" on the islands.
The South American country has been turning away cruise ships carrying the British flag and is taking legal action against five British oil firms exploring the coast of the islands.
Gavin Short, chairman of the islands' legislative assembly, said they were holding the referendum "to show the world just how certain we are about it [our future]".
"I have no doubt that the people of the Falklands wish for the islands to remain a self-governing overseas territory of the United Kingdom.
"We certainly have no desire to be ruled by the government in Buenos Aires, a fact that is immediately obvious to anyone who has visited the islands and heard our views.
"But we are aware that not everybody is able to come to these beautiful islands and to see this reality for themselves.
"And the Argentine government deploys misleading rhetoric that wrongly implies that we have no strong views or even that we are being held hostage by the UK military. This is simply absurd."
'Resolute support'
Prime Minister David Cameron said it was "absolutely right" that the islanders set out how they intended to "make their voices heard once more".
"And Britain will be resolute in supporting their choice," he said.
"Next year's referendum will determine beyond doubt the views of the people of the Falklands. Britain will respect and defend their choice.
"We look to all UN members to live up to their responsibilities under the UN charter and accept the islanders' decision about how they want to live."
Foreign Secretary William Hague said: "I hope very much that Argentina, and indeed the whole of the international community, joins the UK in listening carefully to what they have to say."
The prime minister's official spokesman later confirmed the UK government had been aware of the plans and had been in discussions with the Falklands government before the announcement, but said "it was their decision and we fully support it".
Argentinian president, Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, is due to attend a meeting of the UN's decolonisation committee on Thursday.
The Falkland Islands, a rocky archipelago in the South Atlantic, are 7,780 miles from the UK and 1,140 miles from Buenos Aires.
With the exception of the 1982 occupation by Argentina - which sparked the Falklands War - they have been under British control since 1833.

Sabah, Sarawak and malaysia

Nicola Sturgeon predicts independence 'one day' as she launches bid to replace Alex Salmond
Nicola Sturgeon has said she is “more convinced than ever” that Scotland will one day be independent, but made it clear it would only happen when Scots “choose that course in the polling booth”.
Launching her bid to replace Alex Salmond as First Minister, she distanced her from his suggestion at the weekend that there could be short-cuts to separation, and that Scotland could “declare” independence once the Scottish Parliament had sufficient powers.
Ms Sturgeon, who has been Deputy First Minister since the nationalists came to power at Holyrood seven years ago, is the clear favourite to take over from Mr Salmond, who announced he was stepping down after Scotland rejected independence.
She said she was not preparing for another referendum and the timing would be dictated by circumstances, including the outcome of any in/out referendum on the EU.
But she also refused to rule out the possibility of a commitment to a referendum being part of the SNP’s manifesto as early as the 2016 Holyrood election, saying: “If there is a commitment to a referendum in a manifesto of the SNP at an election and we win that election then that is a mandate for a referendum."
Ms Sturgeon, 44, who has already been endorsed by most of the Cabinet and may not face a leadership contest, also said she would be a “willing partner for progress" in talks about transferring responsibility for more areas to the Scottish Parliament.
She added: "I believe as strongly today as I did last week that independence is the best future for Scotland. And I am more convinced than ever that we will become an independent country. But that will happen only when the people of Scotland choose that course in the polling booth.
“I accept that last week the majority did not choose that future at this time. 1.6 million people is a remarkable number, but it wasn't enough.
“So my task will be to lead Scotland into an exciting new chapter in our national story. To unite our nation around a common purpose so that we can write that story together, and do so in a way that lives up to the hopes, aspirations and expectations of a country that is, on both sides, engaged, inspired and empowered by the referendum experience."
Ms Sturgeon said it would be the “greatest honour” and an “immense responsibility” to become First Minister of Scotland at such an “exciting and optimistic time”.
"I am putting myself forward for two simple reasons: I want to serve my party and my country,” she said. “And I believe I am the best person for the job.
"I also hope that my candidacy, should it succeed, will send a strong message to every girl and young woman in Scotland - no matter your background or what you want to achieve in life, in Scotland in 2014 there is no glass ceiling on ambition."
Her candidacy will also trigger an election for the post of Deputy First Minister. The winners of both will be chosen in a postal ballot of all 52,000 party members, with the results to be announced at the SNP conference in Perth on November 13.
The 26,000 new members the SNP has recruited since the independence referendum will be entitled to vote, as long as they signed up before Wednesday.
Paying tribute to Mr Salmond, she said he had transformed the SNP and made Scotland a better place, adding: “He also helped to make me the person and politician I am today."
Adding that she planned a “different approach” after the referendum, she said: “His are big boots to fill, but if given the opportunity to lead, I will wear my own shoes, and they will certainly have higher heels. I will be my own person and set my own course.
"We would not have come so far as a nation without Alex's vision, tenacity and statesmanship.
"But the challenges and opportunities of tomorrow require a different approach. They will demand the ability, not just to argue a case with determination and conviction, but also to reach out, to work with others and seek common cause on the issues that unite us."
She pledged to hold the UK parties to account on their "vow" of delivering more powers to Scotland's devolved parliament.
Sarawakians the poorest in Malaysia
More than 100,000 register under the e-Kasih programme.
KUCHING: Going by the figures for the e-Kasih programme to combat poverty, Sarawak has taken over Sabah as the state with the largest number of poor people in Malaysia. More than 100,000 people registered under the programme so far this month.
The candid admission comes from the Minister of Welfare, Women and Family Development, Fatimah Abdullah.
“A total of 102,549 people have since registered for the e-Kasih programme,” she said after chairing a meeting on the eradication of poverty here yesterday.
She said 26,335 of the total earned less than RM600 a month, putting them in the “absolutely poor” category, 31,441 earned RM920 or less and 9,633 earned RM1,500 or less.
She pledged that more mobile teams will be deployed to reach out to target groups to ensure that they get the aid they required.
“We will also determine the number of eligible people who are yet to register for the e-Kasih programme,” she said.
Fatimah said mobile teams managed to reach out to five hotspots last year and approved 676 of 2,072 applications for aid.
“For this year, we are reaching out to several other hotspots,” she added.

Namun agak keterlaluan apabila Dr Jeffrey melibatkan Persatuan Kebajikan Bugis Sabah (PKBS) sebagai salah satu dalang melahirkan ramai PTI menjadi warganegara segera melalui kad pengenalan projek.

Semangat Sarawak For Sarawakian semakin hangat dan kuat kerana kesedaran sejarah dikalangan Generasi Muda Negara Sarawak.
Siapakah Pencabar/Pihak Lawan Utama SSKM?

Damage to Sabah irreversible
KOTA KINABALU: Bingkor Assemblyman Jeffrey Kitingan said Putrajaya was refusing to accept the reality that Sabah lost more than it gained from the Federation of Malaysia and that the damage done was almost irreversible.
Kitingan said Brunei and Singapore were examples for Sabah and Sarawak to move forward.
“It is as though Sabah has never had it so good or any better and that if the state had not joined Malaysia there would be no progress and development, ” said Kitingan, who is also the Star Sabah Chief.
He said these arguments were weak because Sabah was now the second poorest in the Federation, relegating Sarawak to being the poorest.
He also took exception to statements that an independent Sabah would be eaten up by its neighbours or infiltrated by Islamic State (IS) militants bent on taking over the state and creating an Islamic caliphate.
“Putrajaya is in a state of denial. They just refuse to accept the stark reality that Sabah lost more than it gained from the Federation of Malaysia,” he said.
Kitingan said the damage suffered by Sabah and Sabahans was almost irreversible and probably beyond repair.
“The demography has been totally changed with population re-engineering and reverse ethnic-cleansing through Project IC/Mahathir.
“We have lost our political franchise to the illegals on the electoral rolls.
“Is it any wonder that the MNLF and Abu Sayyaf in the southern Philippines are supporting IS militants when our own Prime Minister has called for Umno members to follow the example of the IS militants?” he asked.
Kitingan said the security nightmare in Sabah was a monster created by the Federal government’s covert operations in southern Philippines to train and arm Muslim insurgents, including the MNLF and Abu Sayyaf.
He said all this would be evident if the Royal Commission of Inquiry report was released.
He added that the Federal government could not be trusted with the security of Sabah.

Sabah and Sarawak, better together in Malaysia?
Last Thursday, Scotland voted by a clear margin 55.3% to 44.7% in her independence referendum to affirm the unionists’ vision: Scotland and the rest of the UK are “better together”.
If given a choice, will Sabah and Sarawak say the same, “we and Malaya are better together”?
To me, that perhaps explains the paranoia of some Malayan politicians amid the growing cries for separatism and independence, or even just autonomy, from the other shore of South China Sea.
These politicians simply do not have the confidence that Sabahans and Sarawakians will think they have a better future within Malaysia than if they leave. Perhaps these politicians themselves don’t believe in that possibility.
Marriage – partnership or ownership?
This goes back to a fundamental question: what is a political union, or analogously, a marriage? Is it a partnership of equals, or the ownership of properties?
For some, marriage means a claim of property right on the other party – I own you. You are mine.
Following this logic, marriage is sacred, or more precisely, divorce is a one-way street. I can dump you, I can pass you to another master, but you can never dump me.
And if you dare to talk about divorce, you get grounded or whacked. And no neighbour or stranger should try to stop me from beating you up, because this is our internal affairs.
A civilised alternative to this “ownership” view is “partnership”. We are together because we love each other or we gain from being together. I don’t own you and you don’t own me.
If either of us wants divorce, we should discuss about the future arrangement. We may choose to keep the marriage with a better deal or we may part amicably and sort out how to divide what we have.
I cannot beat you up to force you to stay. Neither can you threaten me with violence to agree to divorce on your terms. Breaking up may be a messy business but violence is not an option to get one’s way.
The seditious idea of self-determination
In the past for almost all countries and it is still the case for many now, the government owns the territories and populations.
The government may cede territory and population to another country but the people can never ask to break away with any territory, either to be independent or join another country.
Because separatism is a cardinal sin, silencing, jailing, torturing and killing separatists are legitimate, in the name of defending “national sovereignty” and “territorial integrity”.
Opposite to the supremacy of national sovereignty is the idea of “self-determination”. Simply put, people should be free to decide whether to be part of a country. Put simply, people have the right of divorce.
In a sense, it “rationalises” international border by forcing governments to keep their population happy.
A country’s territories should be held together only when people living in those territories love each other or benefit from living with each other. If a territory finds itself short-changed by the country it is a part of, it can ask to leave.
Promoted by American president Woodrow Wilson and becoming popular after World War 1, “self-determination” is a deeply seditious idea.
It justified the post-war anti-colonial struggles in many Asian and African territories against their European colonial masters, who ruled to exploit.
What annoys many of these post-colonial countries is that this idea is “colour-blind”.
If Asians or Africans could ask to break away from some European colonial empires on free will, why can’t they do the same from the post-colonial states, even though the new rulers may be of the same colour or creed? Does having the same ancestry or faith make exploitation or tyranny more acceptable?
For example, what moral high ground did Pakistan (then backed by the United States and China) have to keep Bangladesh as its eastern province after committing the worst genocides – including massive rapes – post-World War 2, which claimed some 300,000 to three million lives?
Western imperialist conspiracy?
Some would like to believe that separatism is the evil plot of the US and the West to undermine their rivals and opponents and to restore their imperialist control.
Well, the disintegration of Soviet Union into Russia and 14 smaller independent countries in 1990-1991 could be seen as the greatest separatist operation in history.
A founder of the Non-Aligned Movement, Yugoslavia was broken up into seven states in a long, messy and bloody process from 1991-2008.
Nationalists in China are accusing that the West try to break up China in similar manner by supporting separatism/independence of Tibet, Xinjiang and Taiwan and democracy in Hong Kong.
Two facts stand against this propaganda. Russia is perhaps now the largest and most powerful backer of separatists, all armed to the teeth – not only the jet-shooting rebels in eastern Ukraine, but also the regional warlords in Georgia and Moldavia. More importantly, the West is not spared from the challenge of separatism.
Scotland’s “no” to independence from UK was such a relief to many European countries, from Spain, Belgium, Italy to even France because they have their separatists, too. And despite Scotland’s no, Spain’s Catalonia is now pushing for her own independence referendum.
Competing visions for the future
What is interesting is that the West has found a way – though no guarantee of permanent success – to contain peacefully separatism.
It is not nationalist brain-washing or fabrication of history to create a false sense of common past, but offering a more attractive vision of common future than independent but smaller statehood.
In Scotland’s referendum, possibility and timeline of European Union (EU) membership was a key factor because no Scottish separatists want complete independence even from Brussels.
The European integration project itself in fact is the opposite trend to European separatisms. Until a few years ago, former communist countries in Eastern Europe were keenly lining up to surrender part of their sovereignty to join the club which then promised prosperity.
Separatism is also contained by simply loosening up the existent nation-states. The best example would be Belgium, where some of the more affluent Dutch-speaking population in the north (Flemish) want to ditch their poorer Francophone counterpart in the south (Walloon).
After six rounds of political reforms from 1970 to 2012, the unitary state of Belgium is now innovatively transformed into a federation with not only three regional governments (Flemish, Walloon, Brussels), but also in parallel two community governments (Flemish, Walloon).
Outside of Europe, Canada similarly embarked decentralisation and embraced bilingualism to woo the French-speaking Quebec. The province voted “no” in their independence referendum twice – by 60% in 1980 and narrowly by 51% in 1995 – and the Quebec separatist movement is now at its low point.
Now, with Scotland staying on, UK is virtually federalised as per former prime minister Gordon Brown’s proposed solution to make possible “better together”.
The talk of devolution now even spreads to the south of the Anglo-Scot border.
‘You are mine’ or ‘better together’?
The success of Belgium, Canada and Scotland in peacefully fending off separatist demand tells us that a marriage can be held together by giving each other more space rather than battering the alienated partner.
It is also important to note that when a nation’s future can be decided peacefully, it is the future that matters, not the past.
The Scots did not vote “no” because there was not enough movies like Braveheart or Rob Roy to tell them their ancestors’ plight under the English domination. They did so in the knowledge that Scotland was already free when they got to cast their vote to decide their future.
The referendum, therefore, did not free just Scotland, but also the UK. The UK has become stronger because – whatever one may say about its past – it is now a marriage of freewill.
This is where we can draw the lesson for Malaysia. Many Sarawakians and Sabahans are questioning the legitimacy of Malaysia, even calling September 16 “the Occupation Day”, on the ground that Malaysia was forced into being by the British, Malayan and Singaporean governments.
There was never a referendum to seek the population’s consent.
What will hold or change Malaysia’s international boundary is however not our past, not how this country came into being in 1963, but our future, whether we can be “better together”.
“Bornean separatism” is very much a response to “Malayan imperialism” – the perception or feeling that many Malayans consciously or subconsciously hold that Sabah and Sarawak are “ours”, fuelled by the distorted view that Malaysia is the successor of the Malaccan Sultanate, rather than British Southeast Asia.
To bury “Bornean separatism”, we must first bury “Malayan imperialism”.
Stop thinking that “you are mine”. Start thinking how we can be “better together”.
It’s partnership, not ownership. – September 25, 2014.

Sturgeon's likely rise will mean clean sweep for female leaders in Holyrood
A leading figure in the Scottish National party said on Saturday there was "no doubt" that the deputy first minister, Nicola Sturgeon, would be the next leader of the party after Alex Salmond.
That would lead to an unprecedented position in Scottish politics, with all three of the main parties led by women.
Ruth Davidson is leader of the Scottish Tories and Johann Lamont leader of Scottish Labour. Labour's shadow minister for women, Gloria De Piero, called it "truly groundbreaking".
The former SNP leader Gordon Wilson said there would only be an election if Sturgeon herself objected to being simply "crowned" without a vote.
Widely seen as having conducted herself well during the campaign for independence, and as a less divisive figure than Alex Salmond, Sturgeon said this weekend she could think of "no greater privilege" than to lead the SNP.
The party line-up would be in sharp contrast with what Jeane Freeman, a former Labour activist and founder of the successful Women for Independence (WFI) campaign group, has derided as the "men in suits" who hold the key to Scotland's future devolved powers – Ed Miliband, David Cameron, Nick Clegg – and the figure whom Scots are now calling the "fourth man", Gordon Brown.
WFI has more than 9,000 followers and its post-referendum meeting planned for early next month in Perth is so over-subscribed it is looking for a larger venue.
Freeman – whose robust exchange with TV political interviewer Andrew Neil over the NHS became a YouTube hit during the referendum campaign – has vowed to keep WFI going, saying: "We have enjoyed the past three years, and we're here to stay, whatever the result."
Other Scottish women played a prominent part on both sides: writer Lesley Riddoch, shadow Scottish secretary Margaret Curran, MSPs Baroness Goldie and Joan McAlpine, and MSP and columnist Kezia Dugdale. Even the Better Together election-night event was organised by an 18-year-old woman.
The Scottish parliament has achieved Nordic levels of female representation – 35% of its MSPs are women, although that has slightly dropped from what was called a "gender coup" in 1999 when the first intake of MSPs to the new Scottish parliament saw women make up almost 40%.
It puts the Scottish parliament in 22nd place in the world league table – comparing favourably with the House of Commons, which ranks 57th, with just over 20% of its MPs being women. Cameron's record on women in the cabinet is especially poor. The relatively high number of women MSPs is attributed by most to the use of gender quotas formally by Labour and informally by the SNP in the 1999 elections.
Some believe Margaret Thatcher increased women's involvement in politics in Scotland – many simply to oppose her. Dr Meryl Kenny, visiting fellow at the University of Edinburgh, believes Thatcher revived the devolution campaign north of the border. "The negative and gendered impacts of Thatcherite policies actually served to unite women from different perspectives, both inside and outside political parties," Kenny said earlier this year.
Lamont says Thatcher was far from a "sister" for women in politics although she proved that a woman could do the job for anyone who still believed they could not. "I would like to think that a lot of feminists like myself believed you didn't have to take the worst elements of male politics," she said.
De Piero welcomed the landscape in Scotland's emerging political scene. "The prospect of an all-woman lineup for the leaders of the three main parties in Scotland is truly groundbreaking, she said.
"With our Scottish leader and shadow minister for Scotland, Johann Lamont, and Margaret Curran, women's voices are front and centre for Labour in Scotland and we will continue to lead the way to make sure women are equally represented across all levels of politics – which is why over half of our candidates in target seats across the UK are women."
Paying tribute to Salmond, who announced his resignation on Friday, Sturgeon said she accepted that it inevitably raised the question of her succession, but insisted that she would not be making an immediate decision.
"I can think of no greater privilege than to seek to lead the party I joined when I was just 16. However, that decision is not for today. My priority this weekend, after a long and hard campaign, is to get some rest and spend time with my family," she said.

‘Independence still a goal’: SNP deputy Sturgeon bids to succeed Salmond as leader
Independence is still the long-term goal, says Scottish National Party (SNP) deputy leader Nicola Sturgeon, despite last week’s failed referendum. The comments were made as she announced her bid for party leader.
If she secures SNP support to replace outgoing Alex Salmond, who announced his resignation on Friday, Sturgeon would almost certainly become the next first minister of Scotland.
Sturgeon told reporters she was not planning to call a second referendum, but vowed to keep independence squarely on the agenda should Westminster break their pledge of further devolution, or threaten to leave the European Union.
“I am more convinced than ever that we will one day become an independent country but that will happen only when the people of Scotland choose that course in the polling booth,” Sturgeon told a Glasgow press conference.
“The fact is that those who voted Yes, combined with those who voted No on the promise of substantial extra powers, form a powerful majority for real and meaningful change in this country.”
SNP members will vote for Salmond’s replacement at their November party conference. Sturgeon is a strong favourite to win, enjoying both great popularity with members and the backing of leading party figures.

In a phenomenal turn of fortunes after Thursday’s defeat, the party's ranks have more than doubled to around 60,000 in under a week, putting the party’s membership ahead of the UK-wide Liberal Democrats.
“With this influx of new members joining the SNP since the referendum – many of them from Labour’s heartlands – the Westminster establishment now face serious pressure to deliver on the substantial new powers for Scotland which the No camp promised during the campaign,” an SNP spokesperson said on Tuesday.
Scots voted by 55 to 45 percent to reject splitting from the UK in last Thursday’s referendum. Just over a week before, the Conservatives, Labour and Liberal Democrats promised Scots more autonomy over tax and welfare spending if they chose to stay in the UK.
Prime Minister David Cameron said that constitutional reforms, including in Scotland, would not be delivered until after the 2015 UK general election, and that changes would be linked with those made to the UK as a whole.
Pro-independence Scots are keen to keep up the pressure on the UK government to deliver on its pledges. Others are demanding a second independence referendum at the earliest opportunity.

BN-UMNO-PR-STAR-SAPP-USNO Menyokong Perjuangan SSKM
Agenda Malaya yang dibawakan oleh bn-umno adalah seperti berikut;
Agenda Malaya yang dibawakan oleh pr pula adalah seperti berikut;
Kita bersama-sama melihat hasilnya nanti.
Adakah pihak SSKM menyokong BN Sarawak?
Adakah anda faham sekarang? Jikalau ya mohon sebarkan.
Jikalau tidak, sila perdebatkan...

Wajarkah UMNO terus berkuasa di sabah?
Salah satu manipulasi Kuala Lumpur terhadap politik Sabah: Mengguling Kerajaan Sabah yang tidak Akur Kepada Kehendak Kuala Lumpur.
Sejak Sabah memperoleh kemerdekaan pada 31hb Ogos 1963, Kuala Lumpur telah memastikan supaya mana-mana Ketua Manteri Sabah tidak akan bertahan lama apabila mereka tidak akur kepada kehendak Kuala Lumpur;

No need for referendum in Sabah, S’wak
There are more people in the two states who want to be in Malaysia than out.
KOTA KINABALU: There is no need for a referendum to determine whether Sabah and Sarawak want out of the Malaysian Federation, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Nancy Shukri said today.
She said the people of Malaysia, including those in Sabah and Sarawak, had worked as a team to develop the country and it was unfair to neglect those who helped Sabah and Sarawak achieve “what they have today”.
“I don’t think there is a need for that yet. There is no need for a referendum because there are more people talking about being in Malaysia, rather than out.
“That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t fight for development to be on par with our counterparts in Peninsular Malaysia,” said Shukri after launching the Seminar on Rights and Issues of Women and Children at Wisma Wanita today.
The seminar was organised by the Judicial and Legal Training Institute (Ilkap), an agency under the Prime Minister’s Department, in collaboration with the Sabah Women Advisory Council. Also present was Sabah attorney-general and council chairman Mariati Robert.
She was asked on whether there was a need for a referendum in Sabah and Sarawak, as was enacted by the United Kingdom government in Scotland.
Nancy, who is also the Batang Sadong MP, said the people of Sabah and Sarawak enjoyed development under Malaysia, including education, security and infrastructure, and were accorded some of the special rights.
She also reiterated that the Sedition Act 1948 was essential in safeguarding security, harmony and unity in the country. – Bernama

Clarity is the real issue in Borneo
Putrajaya belabours under the delusion that stripping Borneo of the right to free speech would help sweep the problem under the carpet.
The most telling take so far from Borneo on Malaysia has come from Jeffrey Kitingan.
In pointing out the obvious that Putrajaya has presided over the degeneration of the Federation into a unitary state, Jeffrey is taking the dismissive view that “Malaysia has become a meaningless partnership for Borneo.” This is like looking at a person and saying, “Tiada guna punya orang” (Useless fellow). We know that. We need to move forward.
Instead of continuing to beat around the bush on the issue of their unhappiness with the peninsular, rights activists in Borneo should make the following two points in confronting Putrajaya:
- Malaysia in Borneo is the unfinished chapter of the British Empire in this region; and
- There must be self-determination in Borneo now that British intentions are irrelevant.
On Sept 16 1963, the Malayan and British governments dragged North Borneo and Sarawak into the Malayan Federation, renamed the Malaysian Federation, to facilitate the merger of Chinese-majority Singapore with the multiracial peninsular.
The British intention, hatched after World War II, was to shed its defence burden in Borneo and Singapore by transferring it to the Malayan government and to bring British commercial interests and empire in Borneo, Singapore and the peninsular under one administrative framework presided over by the Malayan government, renamed the Malaysian government. The rest is even more history and not very relevant in moving forward.
Still, it’s okay to discuss history for academic purposes. But the real issue in Borneo is the lack of clarity.
The more Sabahans and Sarawakians articulate the issues, the more confused Putrajaya becomes and, in response, it can only pledge more funds to step up the development agenda even as it issues all manner of dire threats against the so-called secessionists in Borneo.
Putrajaya belabours under the delusion that stripping Borneo of the right to free speech would help sweep the problem under the carpet.
Whose money is it anyway?
Looking at Singapore and Brunei, there’s no way that Putrajaya can develop Sabah and Sarawak. Besides, they have lost the last 50 years. Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman threw in the development bait in 1963 and denied any intention of colonising Borneo after the British left.
We can better drive the development agenda if they don’t take our money.
People’s Petition
But we distract too much on the issue of Malaysia.
As the former Sabah State Secretary Simon Sipaun had articulated in recalling that life in Sabah was better before 1963, man does not live by bread alone.
We need to focus for starters on the British intentions behind Malaysia. That’s relevant in moving forward.
Also relevant, and also a great mystery given the British intentions behind Malaysia, was why the former colonial power did not allow for full autonomy for North Borneo and Sarawak in Malaysia. The Federal government should have confined itself to defence, foreign affairs and national economic planning with reference to the common market. It’s important to keep this in mind in moving forward.
There’s a second People’s Petition before the United Nations on self-determination. It takes off from the People’s Petition of 1962, which was derailed by the Brunei Rebellion in that year.
Putrajaya meanwhile could have a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) on Malaysia in Borneo. Various issues could be explored: the definition of “Federation” in Article 160 of the Federal Constitution, the argument that North Borneo and Sarawak were supposed to be equal partners with the peninsular and not the Federation’s 12th and 13th states, the Malaysia Agreement 1963, the 20/18 Points, and Batu Sumpah, among others.
The RCI can come up with the necessary recommendations and options given the various scenarios: Constitutional Reform Commission, decolonisation either because Malaysia was not set up properly or because of internal colonisation, and self-determination which may take the form of full autonomy or independence through decolonisation.
Full autonomy may be a case of too little too late.
Borneo is too far away from the peninsular, its history is different and the people are very different.
To choose the option of Borneo continuing to stay in Malaysia is to risk the continuing influx of illegal immigrants as Putrajaya continues to look the other way, the continuing loss of political franchise and the polarisation in the peninsular stalking Borneo as the Federal government uses the courts to rewrite the Federal Constitution to indulge in creeping desecularisation and creeping Islamisation.
Sebarkan...
